Goals Are Overrated - Systems Are What Matter

Agree or disagree?

Systems are better than goals.

Why is that?

Because a goal, once accomplished, is no longer a motivating factor to keep pressing on with any given set of activities.

Plus, there's A TON of the built-in feeling of "pre-success failure".

 

The Debt Example

Example: The "goal" of getting out of debt.

Huge goal. Usually a long process. Lot's of pre-success failure.

BUT what's ACTUALLY going to get you to that goal?

ANSWER: The "system" of consistent budgeting (i.e. organizing, budgeting and expense tracking).

Boring? Yes (sort of). Effective? Absolutely.

That system, developed into a consistent habit will happily walk them from debt-freedom all the way to some semblance of FI.

So the best way I've found as a coach to help people accomplish their goals is to "hack" the process and instead orient them toward systems.

 

Why Do Systems Beat Goals?

Why does this work so well?

  1. Because moving away from a "goals" mindset negates that constant feeling of "pre-success" failure.
  2. Because if you have a system, you're successful as long as you just keep consistently depositing inputs into the system.
  3. Because you will not only handily accomplish your goals but you're also able to move on to bigger and better accomplishments by continuing to deposit inputs into your system.

Are systems are better than goals?

NOW, in online business, an effective system looks like what we like to call the 1:1:1:1 model.

So to have a successful online business, you need:

Why? Because you're going to be focused: daily, weekly, monthly and yearly on the INPUTS of your system and NOT on far-reaching goals that produce the the that constant feeling of pre-success failure that causes so many people to drop out of the race before they even begin.
